Gov Sanwo-Olu promises to reform transportation, as Lagos marks car-free day

MINA Blog- As part of efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed his commitment to reform the state’s transportation infrastructure in accordance with the Non-Motorised Transportation Plan.

The governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, stated this on Sunday during the maiden edition of Car-Free Day in Ikeja, Lagos.

According to him, the event created an opportunity for the state to create innovative ways of implementing the NMT plan as transportation has been the biggest cause of air pollution.

He said, “This administration is making tremendous efforts to make transportation in the state more effective, efficient, and sustainable through several infrastructural, policy, and institutional reforms to curb the looming dangers of climate change.

“The infrastructure to support the NMT will be put in place to ensure seamless movement for the commuting public, and this decision is important because transportation is the biggest culprit of carbon emissions, which are affecting the environment negatively.

“Bicycle lanes will be created for cyclists on the road to encourage the use of bicycles, which will benefit the public, ensure pollution-free environments, road safety, and improved health for every individual, regardless of their age.’’
