NCC updates industry data, MTN leads mobile market share with 38%

MINA Blog-  Updated industry report on the Nigeria Communications Commission’s website as at September 27, 2021 shows that there was an increase in active subscribers for internet data service between July and August 2021.

 

The report show that Internet data services increased by 140,225,598 million in August 2021, compared with 139,744,180 million in July 2021.

 

MTN continue to lead the market share of the number of active subscribers for telephony service, as at August 2021 with 38.70% of mobile market share, with a total of 73,133,330 active telephone subscribers.

 

Globacom has 27.50% and 51,983,266 subscribers, Airtel has 26.91% share with 50,860,024 and 9mobile with 6.89% and 13,021,179 active telephone subscribers.   

 

Consistent with Section 89 Subsection 3(d) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 (NCA 2003), the Commission is mandated to monitor and report on the state of the Nigerian telecommunications industry, provide statistical analyses and identify industry trends with regard to services, tariffs, operators, technology, subscribers, issues of competition and dominance, etc. with a view to identifying areas where regulatory intervention would be needed;

 

In view of this, the Commission regularly conducts studies and surveys and produces reports on the telecommunications industry, and telecommunications operators are obligated, under the terms of the licenses, to provide the NCC with such data on a regular basis for analytical review and publishing.

 

From the updated report, the industry statistics showed that mobile (GSM) internet subscribers gained 481,418 new active internet subscribers, an increase to 139,870,047 million for the month under review, from 139,384,180million in July 2021.

The fixed wired internet service provider lost 105 existing internet subscribers, and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) lost 4,344 of its internet subscribers in August 2021.  

 

According to the Nigeria’s telephone subscribers increased by 1,525,020 million in the month of August 2021, an increase to 189,330,257million from 187,805,237, of the month under review.

Teledensity increased to 99.18% in August, from 98.39% in July 2021, this is the number of active telephone connections per one hundred (100) inhabitants living within an area and is expressed as a percentage figure.
