INEC confirms over 69,000 Nigerians pre-register to vote within first 7 hours of online CVR launch

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it recorded 69,376 online voter pre-registrations within just seven hours of launching its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) portal on Monday, August 18, 2025.

The online portal—https://cvr.inecnigeria.org—went live at 8:30 AM, and by 3:30 PM, tens of thousands of Nigerians had already taken their first steps toward participating in the democratic process.

INEC in a statement by it National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun said a breakdown of those who registered include, 51.3% (35,573) were female, slightly edging out their male counterparts, who accounted for 48.7% (33,803).

He added young people lead the charge. A striking 69.2% (48,033) were young Nigerians aged 18–34, confirming that the nation’s youth are highly motivated to make their voices heard.

The digital registration platform is open 24/7, offering a convenient option for eligible Nigerians to begin the voter registration process from anywhere in the world.

Meanwhile, Olumekun noted that the Commission is set to commence the in-person registration option on Monday 25th August 2025 at our 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide from 9.00am – 3.00pm during weekdays (Monday to Friday) only.

“This will enable those who prefer the in-person option to register and for the online pre-registrants to complete their registration. The two options will proceed simultaneously throughout the duration of the CVR as indicated in the schedule earlier released by the Commission.

“From next week, the Commission will be giving weekly updates on the CVR, including detailed breakdown by State, gender, age, occupation and disability.

The Commission reminds the public that registration is strictly for Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who are not already registered. Double or multiple registrations are illegal, though provisions are available for transfers and replacement of lost or damaged voter cards.
