NAICOM, FRSC, NHIA Partner to Strengthen Road Safety and Insurance Compliance Under NIIRA 2025

In a renewed effort to improve road safety and promote insurance compliance nationwide, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) have entered into a strategic partnership under the newly enacted Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025.

The collaboration was formalized during a courtesy visit by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, at NAICOM headquarters in Abuja.

Commending NAICOM for the successful enactment of the NIIRA 2025, Mohammed praised the Commission’s reform initiatives aimed at repositioning the insurance industry. He underscored the importance of real-time data sharing between FRSC and NAICOM to enhance emergency response during road accidents and ensure prompt compensation for victims.

The Corps Marshal also advocated for the digital verification of motor insurance certificates to curb the proliferation of fake policies and restore public trust in the compulsory third-party motor insurance scheme.

In his response, Commissioner Omosehin appreciated the FRSC’s support and reaffirmed NAICOM’s commitment to deepening inter-agency collaboration. He noted that the NIIRA 2025 provides stronger legal backing for compulsory motor insurance and establishes a compensation fund for road crash victims, to be jointly managed by a multi-agency committee that includes the FRSC.

Representing the NHIA, Mr. Ajodi Nuhu Nasir commended the partnership, describing it as a landmark initiative that would ensure quick medical intervention and financial protection for accident victims, thereby reducing fatalities on Nigerian roads.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the three agencies outlined key action points to drive implementation:

Data Sharing Integration: NAICOM and FRSC will harmonize their data systems to enable seamless verification and coordinated emergency response.

Joint Public Awareness Campaign: A nationwide campaign will be launched to educate motorists on the benefits of genuine insurance and adherence to road safety regulations.

Enforcement Committee: A joint committee will soon be inaugurated to combat fake insurance policies and strengthen enforcement of mandatory coverage.

Insurance Verification in FRSC Operations: The FRSC will intensify checks for valid third-party motor insurance during vehicle registration and routine operations.

According to the agencies, this alliance marks a new era of inter-agency cooperation aimed at enhancing road safety, ensuring timely medical care, and safeguarding the interests of Nigerian motorists. The formal inauguration of the joint committee is expected to be announced in the coming days.
