As 10,000 athletes from 22 universities gear up for the competition
The University of Jos has pledged to host the most memorable and well-organized edition of the National Universities Games Association (NUGA) in history, as it prepares to welcome thousands of athletes for the 27th edition of the games scheduled for November 6–16.
Speaking during an awareness road walk held on Tuesday in Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, Vice Chancellor of the University, announced that no fewer than 10,000 athletes from 22 universities across Nigeria would be participating in the forthcoming event.
“We are fully prepared to host one of the best NUGA Games ever,” Prof. Ishaya assured. “This road show is our way of announcing to the world that the University of Jos and Plateau State are ready. Our students, staff, and residents are eagerly waiting to welcome contingents from all over the country.”
He further emphasized that Plateau State remains safe, peaceful, and open to visitors, urging Nigerians to disregard negative portrayals of the state.
Prof. Ishaya also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of Education, for their support toward the successful hosting of the games. He particularly commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to sports development and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State for his unwavering support to the university.
“The state government has been incredibly supportive because they understand that hosting over 10,000 visitors will provide a major boost to the local economy,” he added.
Also speaking, Prof. Taye Obateru, Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee for the games, highlighted the broader significance of the event. “The NUGA Games present an opportunity to showcase the peace, hospitality, and vibrancy of Jos. The University of Jos is ready to contribute to national development through sports, talent discovery, and partnerships that will drive both sports and business growth in the state,” he said.
In his remarks, Dr. Peter Gad, Global President of the University of Jos Alumni Association, noted that the event would spotlight the potential of Nigerian youths while changing perceptions about Plateau State.
According to him, the competition will not only promote unity and sportsmanship but also catalyze infrastructural and social development across the state.
